What Causes a Car Engine to Overheat in Traffic?

Car Engine overheating is more likely to occur in slow-moving or stopped traffic because the cooling system has less airflow through the radiator. If the engine temperature continues rising, several components may be responsible.

Why Does an Car Engine Overheat in Traffic?

When a vehicle is moving, air naturally passes through the radiator. At low speeds, the cooling fan becomes more important for maintaining airflow.

Overheating can occur when the cooling system cannot remove enough heat from the engine.

Common causes include:

  • Low coolant level
  • Cooling system leaks
  • Faulty radiator fan
  • Damaged thermostat
  • Blocked radiator
  • Weak water pump
  • Faulty temperature sensor
  • Air trapped inside the cooling system

Common Warning Signs Of Car Engine

An overheating engine may show several symptoms:

Temperature gauge rises The gauge moves above its normal operating range.

Coolant warning appears Some vehicles have a warning light or message when coolant temperature becomes excessive.

Steam or coolant smell A strong coolant smell or visible steam may indicate a cooling system problem.

Air conditioner performance changes Some vehicles may reduce air-conditioning performance when engine temperature becomes too high.

Engine performance decreases Severe overheating can affect normal engine operation.

Why the Cooling Fan Matters

The radiator fan helps move air through the radiator when natural airflow is limited.

A fan problem can result from:

  • Faulty fan motor
  • Damaged relay
  • Blown fuse
  • Wiring problems
  • Faulty temperature sensor
  • Control module issues

If the engine overheats mainly in traffic but operates normally at higher speeds, the cooling fan and airflow system deserve particular attention.

Other Components to Check

Do not assume the radiator itself is always the problem.

A proper inspection may include:

  1. Coolant level and condition
  2. Cooling system leaks
  3. Radiator condition
  4. Thermostat operation
  5. Water pump operation
  6. Cooling fan
  7. Fan control circuit
  8. Temperature sensor
  9. Radiator hoses

Never remove a coolant reservoir or radiator cap while the cooling system is hot. Pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.

If the temperature warning indicates severe overheating, stop the vehicle safely and allow the system to cool before further inspection.
